A Great Series…Gone and Hunger by Michael Grant

Right before school started I want to our local Barnes and Noble and went on a little shopping spree.  I think I spent a good two hours in the teen fiction area and just grabbed books that I thought looked really good.  Gone by Michael Grant was one of those books that I grabbed.  I didn’t read it right away – and it wasn’t until I spotted one of my students (thanks Lyndsey) reading it, that I grabbed it and dove right in.

Did you ever read The Stand by Stephen King?  Or Lord of the Flies?  Or Girl Who Owned a City?  Well, Gone reminds me of different pieces of those novels – except it’s better.  Imagine sitting in your classroom, listening to your teacher talk about whatever, and then all of a sudden…that teacher is gone.  Wait…what?  Did you fall asleep at your desk?  But no – and it’s not just your teacher, it’s every teacher.  And it’s not just your teachers – but all of adults, actually everyone over the age of 15 is…gone.  What would you do?  So begins the story of Sam, Quinn, Astrid and the rest of the kids in the town.  But that’s not the end of it…some of the kids have begun to develop powers.  Yes – powers, like superpowers…flying objects through the air with your hands, shooting fire, healing, and more!  What is going on?  Where did everyone go?  How will they survive?  What will happen when Sam, who is 14, turns 15?

Definitely read Gone!  I loved it.  There was a lot of action and suspense and more twists and turns!  It definitely left me guessing and had me reading at all hours.  I loved reading about the numerous characters and anticipating all of the conflicts that could happen when there are no adults around.  Yes – at first it would seem like heaven!  But when that wears off…what do you do about food?  And the babies left behind in homes?  Who takes care of the little kids?  Who’s in charge?

When you’re done reading Gone, get Hunger – the sequel.  It won’t let you down!  And it’s definitely left me wanting more from this series.  Check it out!

Better Off Famous?

Fame is always great, right? Well in Better Off Famous? by Jane Mendle, Annie Hoffman finds out that it’s not always the case. Annie goes to New York for a violin audition at a college, and when she doesn’t make it, she thinks her life is basically over. But on her way out, she meets a TV producer for a new TV show called “Country Day.” The TV producer thinks Annie would be perfect for the part of Berry, who is the sweet, shy, music-loving new girl. Once the show airs, Annie’s character is loved by everyone. Jason, her boyfriend/tutor, Crane, the nice guy on set, Robin and Hayley, actresses for the show, and the papparazzi all think Annie is a sweet girl on and off set. But Annie is getting tired of the papparazi and starts telling them off.  Then she starts arriving late for work and going out to clubs and drinking, even though she’s only 16. And when Annie is suddenly on the cover of tabloids as the “Good Girl Gone Bad,” she doesn’t know what she can do to turn that around. Will Annie quit, be known as the bad girl, or turn back into the good girl that she used to be?

I really loved this book. I think it teaches you that fame isn’t always great. It also shows that it’s harder to lose a good reputation then to regain it again. I would recommend this book to any girl looking for a fun, drama type of book. I would give this book a 9 out of a 10.
